People, Behaviours and Soft Skills Focus Groups

Please share your thoughts and ideas about the skills and competencies required in your maritime sector.

The Maritime Skill’s Commission (MSC) have funded research to examine the behaviours, interpersonal skills and competencies required to improve recruitment, retention, and the identification of transferable skills within the maritime industry. To establish the above, we are running a series of focus groups and would like to invite you to participate within your relevant sector.

Thinking about behaviours, skills and competencies, we will be discussing the following five questions drawing on your experience within the maritime industry and specifically your own sector:

  1. What interpersonal (human) skills are required in your sector (and why)? – please consider the short and long term.
  2. How could training and technology be of help?
  3. What are the best transferrable skills (from sea to shore – or to other jobs) to have in your sector?
  4. What are the most important leadership skills required in your sector and why?
  5. What is the diversity and inclusion like where you work?

These focus groups will provide an opportunity to share your ideas and experiences with other experts in your sector and help to shape industry growth and retention for the future. We will also be able to share the research report with you when it is finalised later this year. To register, please sign up to the sector link most relevant to you. If your experience in the industry is wide ranging and you think that you will present two different perspectives accordingly, please feel free to register for two focus groups (but no more, as each focus group is limited in numbers to ensure everyone has a voice).

Please do get in touch if you have any questions or if you would like to be involved in this research.
