Horizon Europe: Zero Emission Waterborne Transport (ZEWT)

Introduction

All UK legal entities are fully eligible to apply for funding from the EU as part of consortia submitting proposals for Horizon Europe research and innovation projects.

For more details and help to apply, please contact Louise Mothersole, the Horizon Europe UK National Contact Point for Transport and Mobility (louise.mothersole@iuk.ukri.org)

Forthcoming Calls For Proposals

Competitions all open on 7th December 2023 with a deadline for submissions of 18th April 2024. This may seem a long way into the future, but this is to give time for the necessarily international consortia to form.

Reimbursement Rate

The funding reimbursement rate is dependent upon the type of project and Technology Readiness Level (TRL) as set by the EU, and the type of organisation:

·       Research and Innovation Action (RIA) projects - typically, low(ish) TRL

o   All participants receive 100% of eligible direct costs plus 25% of this for indirect costs

·       Innovation Action (IA) projects - typically, high(er) TRL

o   All not-for-profit participants receive 100% of eligible direct costs plus 25% of this for indirect costs

o   All for-profit participants receive 60% of eligible direct costs plus 25% of this for indirect costs

The five different technology development competitions are:

Achieving high voltage, low weight, efficient electric powertrains for sustainable waterborne transport

·       Budget is €15m

·       Two projects will be funded (around €7.5m each)

·       Type of project is a Research and Innovation Action, i.e., low TRL

Combining state-of-the-art emission reduction and efficiency improvement technologies in ship design and retrofitting for contributing to the "Fit for 55" package objective by 2030

·       Budget is €15m

·       Two projects will be funded (around €7.5m each)

·       Type of project is an Innovation Action, i.e., high TRL

UK Track Record

Over the first two years of Horizon Europe (2021-2022), UK has had fantastic success in the transport sector. 51% of funded transport projects have at least one consortium member from the UK and over 8% of the available funding for transport projects has been allocated to UK organisations. The maritime sector has done particularly well with 31 grants being awarded to UK organisations. You can see an example at https://www.ukri.org/news-and-events/horizon-europe-association-delay-what-we-are-doing-to-support-you/optiwise-horizon-europe-guarantee-case-study/.
