News: Merchant Navy Day commemorated across the UK

Britain’s ‘island nation’ dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers was commemorated across the UK on Merchant Navy Day, Saturday 3 September.

Seafarers UK successfully campaigned for local councils to fly the Red Ensign – the British Merchant Navy’s official flag – on civic centre flagpoles and in public places. The charity’s President, HRH The Earl of Wessex, said: ‘I very much hope you will support this campaign to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy.’

Many of the participating councils organised flag-hoisting ceremonies attended by retired Merchant Navy seafarers and other guests. The Red Ensign was also flown on many historic buildings, especially throughout Scotland – see the ‘Roll of Honour’ at www.merchantnavyday.uk

Merchant Navy Day has been commemorated in the UK since 2000 but this is only the second year it has been actively promoted by Seafarers UK, with the support of the Merchant Navy Association and the Federation of Merchant Mariners.
