News: Maritime UK responds to Prime Minister's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution
Following the announcement of the Prime Minister's Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, Maritime UK Chair, Harry Theochari, said:
"The maritime sector is the foundation of British industry. Not only do we enable 95% of UK trade, but we produce world-class products and services for export – including the cutting-edge science and technology that make the global maritime sector efficient, safe, and sustainable.
“Given maritime's unique capacity to drive growth and employment at a difficult time for the country, the government is absolutely right to view the sector as critical to meeting the UK’s net-zero ambitions and as an engine of the new green industrial revolution.
"The market for green maritime technology is truly global, and the first country to make real progress towards maritime decarbonisation will reap substantial returns. The new green technologies to move vessels must be matched by green infrastructure at ports, so those vessels can recharge and refuel as people and goods come and go.
"Investment in green maritime will create thousands of well-paid, high-skilled jobs across all four nations of the United Kingdom. It will make an especially big impact in coastal communities, many of which have long needed attention and investment from government.
"We look forward to playing our part in the UK's green revolution. Much more public investment will be required if we are to reach our net-zero commitments, but today’s announcement from government is a very welcome first step."
