Maritime UK Launches Career Toolkits to Inspire the Next Generation
Maritime UK is excited to announce the launch of its new Maritime Career Toolkits, designed to support teachers and Maritime Ambassadors in showcasing the diverse and rewarding career opportunities available in the maritime sector. These toolkits will play a key role in raising awareness of maritime careers among young people and equipping educators with high-quality resources to integrate into their lessons.
Now in its fourth year, Maritime UK’s Ambassador Programme has grown significantly, with 376 active ambassadors engaging over 53,500 young people in the last 12 months. Despite the vast opportunities within the industry - including careers in ship design, offshore wind, maritime law, and seafaring - many students and educators remain unaware of the sector’s potential. The new Career Toolkits aim to bridge this gap by providing interactive presentations, lesson plans, and engaging activities that can be adapted for different age groups and learning environments.
The resources have been carefully structured to ensure flexibility for ambassadors when delivering sessions in schools and colleges. Presentations include dedicated slides for speakers to personalise and share their own career journeys, helping to make sessions relatable and impactful. Meanwhile, educators will benefit from lesson plans tailored to different formats, whether for assemblies, classroom activities, or career fairs.
Maritime Minister, Mike Kane said:
“As part of our Plan for Change, we’re committed to breaking down barriers to opportunity so that people have the chance to pursue careers they may not have considered before.
“That’s why it’s fantastic to see Maritime UK raising awareness, particularly amongst young people, of the various roles and opportunities available in the sector, helping to support the next generation of mariners.”
Scarlett Black, Director of Operations at Maritime UK, said:
"We’re thrilled to launch these Career Toolkits, which will be instrumental in helping teachers and Maritime Ambassadors introduce young people to the exciting possibilities within our sector. By making maritime careers more accessible and engaging, we can inspire the next generation of talent and ensure a strong future for the industry. We encourage anyone working in maritime to consider becoming an ambassador and help us make a real difference in shaping young people’s career aspirations.”
The toolkits will be available via the Maritime UK website and will be shared with regional careers hubs and schools across the country.
