Maritime UK celebrates third Pride in Maritime Day
Maritime UK is proud to celebrate the third annual Pride in Maritime Day.
Established in 2022 as part of an initiative by the Pride in Maritime Network, a key component of Maritime UK’s Diversity in Maritime program, Pride in Maritime Day falls on the 28th of February. This network is dedicated to addressing obstacles encountered by the LGBTQ+ maritime community, providing education, fostering empowerment and support among colleagues, and sharing best practices that promote inclusivity for LGBTQ+ professionals throughout the sector.
The Pride in Maritime Network has experienced continuous growth, with 2023 witnessing members, including allies and colleagues from the LGBTQ+ community, coming together for an Industry Roundtable and Networking Event. This gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made throughout the year, delve into the experiences and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, and further strengthen the collaborative efforts within the maritime sector.
Maritime Minister Lord Davies said: “Thanks to Maritime UK’s unwavering commitment to champion diversity, we have seen a growth in the Pride in Maritime Network.
“This vital network plays a crucial role in addressing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community within the sector and the growing participation demonstrates the industry's increasing awareness and dedication to advancing inclusivity.”
Scarlett Black, Head of Programmes commented: Maritime UK is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community within the industry. Pride in Maritime Day serves as an educational platform, encouraging us to embrace, celebrate, and offer support to the LGBTQ+ community. It is vital that the Pride in Maritime Network continues to take strides in the right direction to support this area of our industry.
