Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 is a vital opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good mental health and supporting those who may be struggling with their mental wellbeing. This year the week, which is run by the Mental Health Foundation, will take place between Monday 15th – Sunday 21st May and the theme centers around anxiety.

The maritime sector is a vital industry within the UK, playing a significant role in the country's economy and providing employment for over a million people. Like many other industries, work can be stressful and demanding, and as such it is essential to prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of those who work within it.

Maritime UK, through the Diversity in Maritime Programme, has a number of initiatives which promote mental health in the workplace, including the Mental Health in Maritime Network which aims to:

  • provide a collaborative platform to share information among all organisations, in support of aiding others to achieve and develop mental health management practices.
  • gather and share case studies profiling maritime organisations best practice guides and policies to assist and improve mental health across the sector.
  • provide individuals working in the maritime sector and companies with relevant information about mental health resources, best practice guides and toolkits.

In 2021, Maritime UK, also launched the Culture of Care initiative alongside the Mental Health Pledge, where organisations from across the sector committed to making a positive difference through action and support, not just within their own organisations, but also across the UK maritime sector and the broader maritime community.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we continue to promote the importance of maintaining good mental health and seek to progress our own initiatives in support of people within the sector.
