In Autumn 2022, Maritime UK and our network of regional cluster organisations around the UK hosted a number of update and networking events on behalf of the Department for Transport to disseminate information around Round 3 of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC3). We have now been approached for support in hosting a further UK SHORE regional update event following the announcement from the Department for Transport on 06 February 2023 of a new ‘Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI)’ Competition and a ‘Clean Maritime Research Hub’ competition, details about which can be accessed here:

In short, a multi-million-pound Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI) competition is being launched to help decarbonise the UK's maritime sector. The ambition is that zero-emission vessels will set sail in UK waters within 2 years, on the back of £77 million of government investment in clean maritime technology. This is the first time in UK history the government is intervening to specifically target this level of funding on green maritime tech which is already well developed. The funding will take the tech from the factory to the sea – identifying which projects will have a long-term impact in reducing emissions. Successful projects must show they could use this money to work with major UK ports and operators to launch a zero-emission vessel by March 2025. Examples of such technology include battery electric vessels, shoreside electrical power and ships running on low carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia.

UK SHORE aims to transform the UK into a global leader in the design and manufacturing of clean maritime technologies. Key to this is addressing barriers across a range of TRLs. Therefore, UK SHORE is also partnering with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to jointly allocate £7.4m for a competition to establish a flagship UK national Clean Maritime Research Hub. The successful Hub will be made up of research organisations like universities and conduct TRL 1-3 research in clean maritime. The Hub will develop partnerships with industry and civic organisations to identify relevant research challenges and leverage match-funding.

The update events detailed below are intended to be open to all organisations within each region and will provide an opportunity to network and learn more about UK SHORE’s interventions. UK SHORE, Innovate UK, Innovate UK KTN, and EPSRC officials will be in attendance.
