Work Experience

The Maritime Industry must provide experiences of workplaces to students in order for them to consider Maritime Careers. This could be in the form of a school site visit, for example students undertaking a tour of a port, or it could be in the more traditional work experience sense of a student shadowing an employee for a day or week. There are restrictions to the work that students can undertake and the hours that they can work.

MNTB Guidance on Work Experience

The Merchant Navy Training Board has published Workplace Experience Guidelines for 2022. The Workplace Experience Guidelines are approved by the UK Chamber’s Employment Committee and National Maritime Occupational Health and Safety (NMOHSC) Committee, comprising the Chamber, Nautilus International, RMT and MCA.

Gatsby Benchmark 6 & the importance of work experience

Gatsby Benchmark 6 looks at students experiences of workplaces. It is vital that students are able to experience different workplaces throughout their education to ensure that they are choosing the right career for them. Work Experience gives students a chance to 'see behind the doors' of the workplace and learn more about an industry that they are interested in.

Gatsby Benchmark 6 for schools means that every pupil should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.

  • By the age of 16, every pupil should have had at least one experience of a workplace, additional to any part-time jobs they may have.
  • By the age of 18, every pupil should have had one further such experience, additional to any part-time jobs they may have.

Gatsby Benchmark 6 for colleges means that every learner should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.

  • By the end of their study programme, every learner should have had at least one experience of a workplace, additional to any part-time jobs they may have.
