The Department for Transport has been announced as Category Sponsor for the Maritime 2050 Award for the third national Maritime UK Awards 2022 to be held at the Glasgow Science Centre on 10 March.
The Maritime UK Awards recognise the very best of the UK’s maritime sector, organised by industry, for the benefit of the industry.
The Maritime 2050 Award is open to businesses of any size, this award will be made to a business that is taking steps to capitalise upon the opportunities presented within Maritime 2050.
Victoria Race, Deputy Director of Strategy and Programmes (Maritime, DfT) said:
“DfT is sponsoring the awards to demonstrate its support for our partners and the importance of collaboration. The Maritime sector has faced unprecedented challenges over the last two years, yet it has managed to overcome these and make large strides forward. The resilience and innovation shown is remarkable and this event is a perfect opportunity for us to show our pride in the UK’s Maritime industry. It is a privilege to celebrate the successes of the last year alongside industry, which include hosting the COP26 summit and London International Shipping Week, and progress on maritime decarbonisation through our Clean Maritime competitions.
“Maritime 2050 is vital for the sector. It is a joint vision between government and industry that paves the way forward for the next 30 years. It demonstrates our collaboration and ambition for the UK maritime industry, with the strategy lying at the heart of everything we do. From protecting our seafarers to reducing emissions, the strategy evidences to the public how vital maritime is to our nation. Our Recovery Route Map, due to be published this year, will reflect on the impact of the pandemic and align Maritime 2050 with the recovery of the sector. Maritime 2050 is a product of the strong relationship between government and industry, demonstrating the shared ambition for the UK to retain its place as a leading maritime nation.
“The awards are a fantastic opportunity for maritime leaders to come together and share successes. They offer a unique opportunity to reward the talent and celebrate achievements over the last year. As well as providing a space for maritime stakeholders to showcase successes, the awards highlight success to the public as well, recognising the importance of maritime to the UK. They provide our industry with the spotlight it deserves.”
Ben Murray, Chief Executive of Maritime UK said:
“We are delighted to have the Department for Transport as a sponsor of the 2022 Maritime UK Awards, and for the Maritime 2050 Award in particular. Since being published in January 2019, Maritime 2050 has been the fundamental guide for Maritime UK’s work and has provided a heading for businesses across the sector. It is significantly enhanced the collaborative relationship between government and industry on maritime and set a clear path to becoming the world’s most competitive maritime centre by the middle of the century.
In June 2021, Maritime UK published a stocktake of progress in implementing the strategy, with truly demonstrable progress being made across the board. The 2022 awards will shine a light on many of the projects being delivered in response to Maritime 2050, and we cannot wait to celebrate them in Glasgow!”
