The winner of the 2020 Employer of the Year Award, sponsored by Bachmann Group, will be announced at the second annual Maritime UK Awards, due to take place in November. The Awards recognise the very best of the UK’s maritime offering through fourteen different categories and are organised by industry, for the benefit of industry.

Open to businesses, charities and organisations of any size, the Employer of the Year category recognises those organisations that have created a stimulating and supportive work environment for its employees, and that have shown a real commitment to their welfare. Shortlisted candidates will have a high level of staff satisfaction and will have worked actively to create a well-motivated, ambitious, and integrated workforce. The winner of the category will be announced at the virtual event broadcast from Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, on 12 November 2020 from 5pm.

The shortlisted finalists for this year’s Employer of the Year Award are three organisations that have demonstrated a commitment to their employees, and to creating thriving working environments: Hill Dickinson, Teekay and Actisense.

Hill Dickinson is an international commercial law firm with a substantial maritime practice comprising of more than 180 legal experts offering expertise across maritime and commercial disciplines. Throughout the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the firm has placed its emphasis on ensuring that employee welfare, both physical, mental and emotional, remains the number one priority and core focus of their strategy.

Teekay has, since its establishment in 1973, developed from a regional shipping company into one of the world’s largest marine energy transportation companies. The company is committed to ensuring a solid knowledge base through training and experience, and their commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, various national cadet programmes and other cross-training efforts. With courses in anchoring, navigation and Arctic survival offered to all employees, Teekay will ensure they are amongst the industry’s most qualified.

Actisense design and manufacture products for the international leisure and commercial marine markets and have been able to continue to grow steadily as an organisation despite the detrimental effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. A robust home-working system has enabled the company to continue working through the pandemic and safeguard all existing jobs. The company has been able to add two new members to the team in recent months and have set ambitious targets to create more jobs in 2021.

Harry Theochari, Chair of Maritime UK, said:

“We’re really happy to announce the finalists for the Maritime UK Awards 2020. Across all fourteen categories we can see some genuinely world-beating products, services, and operators. The quality of entries this year is testament to the strength and commitment of our maritime sector to be world-class despite the most challenging of circumstances.”

Ben Murray, Director of Maritime UK, said:

“We were determined that these awards would go ahead, and in an ideal world would have been one of the first occasions at which colleagues from across the sector could come back together following COVID-19. With that not being possible due to new restrictions, we think it’s really important to celebrate the remarkable work that has been going on – in responding to COVID-19, and in spite of it – which sends a message of resilience and ambition.”

The 2020 Maritime UK Awards are hosted by Maritime UK South West and delivered by Plymouth City Council. Diamond Sponsors are the MLA College and the University of Plymouth.
